Physical Education
PE Intent Statement
At our SEMH school, the intent of the Physical Education curriculum is to support the holistic development of every young person by promoting physical wellbeing, emotional regulation, and positive social interaction through inclusive and engaging physical activity.
We recognise that many of our students have experienced barriers to participation in education, including negative experiences of sport, low confidence, and difficulties with self-regulation. Therefore, our PE curriculum is designed to be accessible, supportive, and restorative, enabling all students to experience success and enjoyment in movement.
Our PE provision aims to:
- Develop physical competence and confidence by offering a broad and adapted range of activities that meet diverse needs and abilities.
- Support emotional wellbeing and regulation, using physical activity as a tool to manage stress, anxiety, and behaviour.
- Foster positive relationships and social skills, including teamwork, communication, empathy, and respect.
- Build resilience and self-esteem, encouraging students to take risks in a safe environment, learn from mistakes, and celebrate personal progress.
- Promote lifelong engagement in physical activity, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to lead healthy, active lifestyles beyond school.
Our approach prioritises personalised learning, consistency, and positive reinforcement, underpinned by trauma-informed and attachment-aware practice. Through structured routines, clear expectations, and supportive staff relationships, we create a safe space where students feel valued and enabled to succeed.
Ultimately, PE at our school is not only about physical development, but about empowering young people to better understand themselves, build healthier relationships, and develop the confidence to engage positively with the world around them.
