Summer term 2025
Week ending 9th May
7AD- In Science this week 7AD have been investigating solubility. They ground up de-cafe coffee beans and used a filter to show the difference in solubility. This week was also the last bouldering session and the boys really enjoyed getting out and showing off their skills.
7CR- In 7CR this week we were treated to a trip to Future Bodies gym. The boys enjoyed using the different equipment but weren’t fans of the smell! We have also enjoyed lots of time outside learning how to play cricket. In English, we have been working on descriptive language. The boys have been creating their own descriptions of the garage in our text Skellig as well as finishing sentences from the text. In RE, they discussed what the trinity is and where it comes from in the bible. In maths, they played a game about squared and cubed numbers. They enjoyed running to different places in the room to show the answers. Overall, they have worked super hard this week!
7CR are the best!
9BP- Another good week for 9BP. In maths this week they have continued their work in maths on Pythagoras Theorem and are really getting on well with this subject. In history they have been learning about Lucius Septimus Severus. In cooking this week, they made some lovely carrot cakes which looked and smelled amazing! In Science they have been doing more work on Ions and bonding. In Rural Science this week they have been putting up bird nets up and were great working with the tools
Week ending 2nd May
7AD- In maths have been working on prime and square numbers in maths this week and have been smashing it! They have been learning about the English Civil War which they have been very interested in.
7CR- This week in 7CR we have gotten back into the swing of learning and have been making the most of the sunshine! We have enjoyed lots of walks and trips to the park for rural science and explored the local area. In RE we learnt about the Eucharist and how this is important for some Christians. We were able to share experiences of this from some of our primary schools. In PE we worked on some of our parkour skills and learn how to do a dash vault and use the gym equipment correctly which was lots of fun!
7CR are the best!
9BP- In maths this week they have been working on square and triangular numbers and square numbers and beginning to work on Pythagoras theorem. In English they have continued their amazing poem works, including writing their own! In PE they have practising their golf skills in the sunshine! There are some naturals in the class! In cooking this week they made Mac n cheese this week which looked delicious.
10MP/10JFC- Have been continuing their work making stencils in Project this week which are coming along great. In English both classes have been learning about poetry and creating their own which have been very creative!
11MU-Have researching work experience opportunities in the local area and preparing for their speaking and listening exams coming up. Well done to them and we are wishing them the best of luck with all their exams in the coming weeks and months!
Week ending 25th April
Welcome back!
It’s been a great first week of the summer term and we hope you all had a restful Easter Break.
7CR- 7CR have had a fantastic first week back! They have been out on a walk to the river and are loving the warmer weather. They have been very engaged with their learning in Science, Maths and English, using teamwork and super communication skills for all their learning.
7CR are the best!
7AD- 7AD have been out on a walk down Charlotte’s Bridge to explore the river and local wildlife. In Science they have done some amazing work learning about atoms which the whole class were very engaged with.
9BP- 9BP has had an amazing first week back and have started a new topic in English, starting to learn and discuss poetry. The first poem they read and discussed was Life doesn’t frighten me by Maya Angelou and her use of stanzas to bring a flow and her feeling in the poem. In cooking they made lasagne which all turned out wonderful. In maths they have revisited their work on angels to reinforce prior learning and sum of interior angles in all polygons and exterior angels. In Humanities they have been learning about the Civil Rights Movement in the United States in the 1950s and 60s and the significant people from that period. In Science they have been also revisited their work on atomic structures and the different states of matter.
10MP and 10JFC- 10MP and JFC have been doing great work in maths multiplying by 10,100,1000 and applying this knowledge to change metric units. They have also started a new project in their creating stencils to start their graffiti project.
Spring term 2025
Week ending 21st March
7CR-
Another busy week here in 7CR which started off with the boys digging like crazy but much to their disappointment they've still not made it all the way to China!! In Science, the boys have been learning about forces using items around the classroom to develop their knowledge. They focused on speed and worked out how fast different objects could travel. In English, the boys have been watching film trailers, then reviewing them which they've found a lot of fun. We have also used our brains together to solve river crossing challenges and practised our touch-typing skills. We had a lovely trip to the local park on Thursday. The boys had a race to see who could climb to the top of the spiderweb first, we have a class full of spidermen! We loved the sun, roll on the summer so we can spend more time outside!
7CR are the best!
7AD-
This week they went to the park in Rural Science, all students enjoyed doing the exercises, learning outside the classroom is a valuable part of our curriculum. Students all practised being safe. In maths they continued their work on area. In RE they have been learning about the tree of Christianity and different denominations. In science we have investigated balanced and unbalanced forces. In maths they have contused their work on shape and been smashing it.
9BP-
9BP has had another busy week! They have been doing some amazing engaging work on what fraud is and how to stay safe from it in PSHE, working as a team for a quiz at the end of the lesson getting 100%! In Science they have completed a test on cell division and they all made a super effort, also started looking at the structure of DNA and meeting Miss Davies’ new anatomy mannequin, doing some discovery learning with it. In English they have been working on a new piece of Sherlock Holmes this week, The Red Headed League, where they learnt about introspection and how Sherlock found this by listening to classical music. In maths they have done a number assessment and started work on data collection.
10JFC-
10JFC are settling well into their new class group. They have been bonding as a class and taking part in lots of group activities. In science, they have been learning about photosynthesis including what plants produce and need during this process. In maths, they have been doing a number assessment and learning about utility bills for later life. In maths, 10JFC have been working on an end of unit assessment in preparation for the end of term. They were up for this challenge and their hard work has paid off!
10MP-
This is the first week as a larger tutor group and have been settling in well! They have progressed from photosynthesis and began to look at adaptations of plants and animals to their environment, we related this to the stick insects and the hamster. In maths they have been doing some amazing work on surface area
11MU-
Our year 11s have been doing their mock exams this week and we are so proud at their perseverance and wish them the best of luck!
Week ending March 14th
7AD have been doing an amazing job planting trees as spring is starting to arrive! In maths they have been working on estimating area, shapes and have been absolutely smashing it! In English they have been focusing on symbolism in gothic poetry such as in The Raven by Edger Alan Poe which they are finding very engaging!
7CR have had a super busy week, starting with making some very scrummy jam tarts in food tech, then going swimming to make a splash. The boys have used a lot of energy carrying on with digging their hole (they're digging all their way to China! But agreed that making a pond might be a more successful goal). In Maths they have been learning about area, which they all enjoying working out their hand area and seeing who has the largest hands in the class. In rural science the boys loved getting out and going to Meldon reservoir where they learnt all about how a dam works, which they found very interesting after trying to build their own in a stream a few weeks ago.
7CR are the best!!
9BP have had another great week. In Maths they have worked on circumferences and today 14th of March worked on Pi for International Pi Day! In Food Tech this week they have made some stunning Jam Tarts. In English they finished their work on A scandal in Bohemia. In Rural Science they have done some tree planting which was enjoyed by everyone, although they couldn’t match 7CR’s digging scale! They also put down their books and Chromebooks to go out on an adventure to the river this week, singing walking songs and trying to spot some fish!
Week ending March 7th
7CR
This week 7CR have started an amazing pond project. During their explorations in Rural Science, they started digging and decided to develop their hole into a pond. They have been working on their project every spare minute to get the project finished before the end of Spring in the hopes of some frogs arriving. They have been calculating the area of the pond so that they can buy the appropriate amount of pond liner and are collecting rocks to make the perfect habitat for any pond creatures.
7AD
In science this week 7AD have been meeting our new class pet and some of our students took part in a football match, this was really great to see, we are so proud of our students getting involved!
In rural science we have been working on adding to our whole school by planting bushes.
We are working on coordinates in Maths, we have some real maths stars amongst us!
9BP
9BP made pancakes on an open fire during rural science on pancake day and had an amazing walk in the spring sunshine to the local reservoir to see where the local water comes from, made pasta and meatballs in food technology. They carried on their work with Sherlock Holmes in English. In maths they have been covering angles with parallel lines. We have introduced the key words alternate, corresponding and interior angles. We have finished off this week with a relay. In Science they have done a cloning experiment with cauliflower and are awaiting their results! The nature of plant stem cells mean that plants are much easier to clone than animals.
10JFC
This term we are working on number from place value, multiplying and dividing decimals to percentage change. Estimating to the nearest integer (whole number) and one decimal place.
In English we are reading Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. We are concentrating on understanding the characters in the first chapter.
Week ending February 28th
7CR had a great swimming lesson, made scones in food technology, went on a walk around Belstone and played tutor-based team games.
7AD students have been working on different types of forces in Science and created their own comics and art in their free time. Digital media they are completing their work ahead of the other classes and have begun their own independent projects
9BP students went on a trip to Dartmoor which they really enjoyed as it was the first sunny day out this year! They have also been working towards their own reward time. In Maths, the students have been working on angles, measurements of turns, rules associated with full turns, half turns, straight lines and polygons. In English lessons they have been working on Sherlock Holmes and have started the text A scandal in Bohemia. In Humanities they have started work about Black History. In Digital Media they have been working on putting documents together in a professional way.
11MU have been preparing students for their upcoming assessments. In Maths it has been a busy week, working on factors, multiples, high common factors and low common multiples, ratio and proportions have all been covered. In English the children have been doing practice papers for their exams in the coming weeks.
